sound jammer bracelet.

a cast metal cuff that jams every microphone within two metres. you wear it to a dinner. your phone hears nothing.

[ hero image ]

every person reading this is carrying a MEMS microphone in their pocket. the sound jammer bracelet disrupts them. ten ultrasonic transducers arrayed on a modular pod system. when activated, every microphone within two metres captures nothing.

it looks like jewellery because it is jewellery. most surveillance art makes the invisible visible. this work does the opposite. it conceals. the jamming is a private act between the wearer and the object. no one at the table needs to know.

"if surveillance operates through ambient consent, then this refusal is equally ambient."

how it works

ten ultrasonic transducers emit signals above human hearing that overwhelm MEMS microphones: the kind in your phone, your smart speaker, your laptop. the jamming radius is approximately two metres. the electronics design draws on published research (Chen et al., "Wearable Microphone Jamming," University of Chicago, 2020) adapted to a jewellery-scale form factor.

how it's built

designed in parametric CAD (Python/Blender). prototyped on consumer 3D printers. modular pod system: each transducer sits in its own socket that press-fits into the bangle. ten pods at three tilt angles for spherical coverage. the production path is lost-wax casting in brass or silver. currently on version 8, post-print iteration.

version history
  • v8post-print fixes. bangle +20%, pegs -10%, bore tolerance doubled, tilted pods restored. 25 individual STLs.
  • v7first physical print. press-fit peg system, ladder spacers, modular assembly.
  • v6housing removed. clean oval band. pods distributed 360 degrees.
  • v3woven-tube golden-knot cuff. twelve transducer positions. lost-wax casting path established.
  • v1first parametric model. proof of concept that jewellery-scale jamming geometry is possible.
